What is MTD for IT?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT) is a government initiative that will revolutionise how taxes are reported in the UK. 

Beginning April 2026, sole traders and landlords with an income above £50,000 must keep digital records and use HMRC-recognised software, like Xero, to submit quarterly updates and a final annual declaration to HMRC. This will include all business income, expenses, and other taxable income such as savings or investments. 

The scheme aims to make tax processes more efficient, accurate, and transparent by moving away from paper-based or spreadsheet records to fully digital systems. Lower income thresholds will join in subsequent years.
