Linking your Companies House Personal Code to your PSC record
Every individual PSC who has verified their identity at Companies House will have a 14‑day window in which they must give Companies House their personal code and link it to each PSC role, using a new online service. This is a legal requirement, separate from the original ID‑verification step, and applies even where the PSC has already used their code in connection with a director role or confirmation statement.
What is a PSC?
A PSC (Person with Significant Control) at Companies House is an individual who owns or controls a company, often referred to as a beneficial owner. They hold more than 25% of shares or voting rights, and have the power to appoint or remove directors, or exercise significant influence.
What is the personal code?
Once a PSC has successfully verified their identity, Companies House issues an 11‑character ‘Companies House personal code’ which is unique to that individual and not to any particular company. The code is not shown on the public register and should be stored securely, but it can be reused to connect that person’s verified identity to every directorship or PSC role they hold.
When PSCs must provide the code
Every PSC has a specific 14‑day period in which they must provide their personal code and a simple verification statement for each PSC role.
The dates of that 14‑day window depend on whether the individual was already on the PSC register before 18 November 2025 and whether they are also a director of the same company, but in each case the law requires the code to be supplied within that period or an extension requested.
For context:
- Existing PSCs who are also directors will generally provide their code as directors in the company’s next confirmation statement and then separately as PSCs within 14 days of that confirmation statement date.
- Existing PSCs who are not directors will typically have to provide their code in the first 14 days of their birth month, based on the date shown on the public register.
- Anyone becoming a PSC on or after 18 November 2025 must supply their code within 14 days of being added to the Companies House register (or at the point of filing where the PSC change is notified at the same time).
How to link the code to a PSC record
To connect a verified PSC’s personal code to the company’s PSC record, there’s a dedicated Companies House online service called ‘Provide identity verification details for a person with significant control (PSC)’. The PSC needs to:
- Access the ‘Provide identity verification details for a PSC’ service via GOV.UK and sign in with a Companies House account.
- Enter the company number, select the relevant PSC from the list, and confirm that this is the correct individual.
- Input the PSC’s Companies House personal code and tick the declaration confirming that the PSC’s identity has been verified.
The service also allows a request for extra time if the PSC cannot meet the 14‑day deadline, although this should only be used where there is a genuine difficulty.
What you should do now…
- Make sure each PSC has completed identity verification and obtained their Companies House personal code – most clients have already completed this stage.
- Keep your personal code safe but accessible, as PSCs will need it link to each company.
- Diarise each PSC’s 14‑day window and ensure the ‘Provide identity verification details for a PSC’ service is completed in time for every PSC role.
This is the second stage of compliance: first verify and obtain the personal code, then, within the relevant 14‑day window, use that code to formally link your verified identity to each PSC record at Companies House. As with the first part, this is not a process we can complete on clients’ behalf, though we will remind PSCs of the need to link their code to the company when we confirm submission of the next round of Confirmation Statements.
