Deferred VAT Scheme – Final Call!

Coronavirus, VAT,

The COVID VAT Deferral Payment Scheme enabled businesses to spread the payments of deferred VAT from the first quarter of 2020. It opened on the 23rd February 2021, and closed on the 21st June 2021.

The beauty of the scheme was that the earlier you joined, the more time you had to pay the deferred VAT liability, the maximum being in eight monthly payments.

If you didn’t enter the scheme before the 21st June, you now have until 30th June to contact HMRC and pay in full in one single payment or to make an arrangement to pay.

You will be charged a 5% penalty or interest if you don’t pay your deferred VAT in full or make an arrangement to pay by this date.

Telephone: 0800 024 1222

Opening times:

Monday to Friday: 8am to 4pm, closed on weekends and bank holidays.

Before contacting HMRC…

  • Have your VAT registration number on hand.
  • Submit any outstanding VAT returns or you won’t be able to ask for an arrangement to pay over time.
  • Know how much you owe. This should include the amount you originally deferred and any amounts you may have already paid.

You can still have a Time to Pay Arrangement for other HMRC debts and outstanding tax.

Please don’t ignore this deadline if you haven’t already organised making your payment. HMRC will be far less accommodating if they come to you than if you contact them! If we can help at all, please get in touch.
